I was eagerly looking through the latest "How Will You Spend Your Dividend" REI members mailer and came across the brand new Osprey Packs Poco child carrier. Since when did they start making cool outdoorsy baby carriers? When I was a kid I tooled around on mommas back in a simple aluminum framed nylon baby carrier that had the required two leg holes and an opening to stick my butt. Oh, and did I mention that I fell on my face every time the thing was set down? Um, yeah it is surprising my nose bounced back from so many collisions.

Wolverine Shoes that Walk on Water: Terrain Low iCS Waterproof

When I got my hands (well feet rather) on my first pair of Wolverine Shoes - the Terrain Low Wolverine iCS Waterproof my immediate reaction was bliss. I had been trying out a couple pairs of hikers that just didn't fit my feet so when I slipped on the Wolverine Terrain I could hear my feet gasp with the difference. I did notice however that they fit a bit loosely so perhaps going down a half size would be a good idea. I'll get back to the fit in a moment, but first the Wolverine Terrain are aptly named as they do handle a wide variety of surface conditions.

Over the past few months I've put these Wolverine shoes to the test in various conditions including a desert hike through Sabino Canyon in Tuscon Arizona, where I battled 20 foot tall cacti with my bare hands (and lost - long story don't ask), deciduous forest hikes through mud and falling fall leaves, heavy snow storms three inches deep (if you would have told me I'd see a Minnesota winter with only a few inches of snow I would have laughed, but it happened), trekking along frozen ponds, climbing over slippery river rock, and even submerging the Terrain knee deep in a swimming pool to rescue a struggling child (not as heroic as it sounds - but if you want to send flowers and gifts by all means...).

So, will Wolverine shoes hold up to all sorts of terrain - yes. But these Wolverine Terrain are best suited for a comfortable stroll along paved or soft trails than hard core climbing or hiking. The Terrain are built for comfort, from the super cool Wolverine iCS system, to the soft foam inner section of the sole which is designed more for cushioning or perhaps shock absorption rather than durability. The former is a big win in the design the latter is probably the biggest complaint I've noticed as well as read from other reviewers.

First off the Wolverine iCS system (check out the video above for the detailed features) is a pretty cool high tech way to give you more comfort no matter how you walk. If you want a firmer feel just spin the dial on your Wolverine shoes to Firm, if you want a softer cushion C is your best friend. The Wolverine iCS will even help you if you tend to Pronate or Supinate with and Inner or Outer setting.

Like I mentioned the biggest drawback to these Wolverine shoes is the foam sole. Well, let me clarify, depending on how you hike it may be a positive or a negative for you. If you plan to do heavy hiking on rocky or hard terrain you may want a hiking shoe with a more durable bottom and tighter fit. If you mostly hike around town on soft surfaces you'll love the soft foam and roomy interior as it helps with comfort and shock absorption.

The good news is that 2012 Wolverine shoes now incorporate the much loved Vibram tread in their Rugged Outdoor line so Wolverine has listened to enthusiasts suggestions with offerings for the more rugged outdoor adventurer. The 2012 Terrain Low and Mid styles still use the foam bottom however so take that into consideration when looking for Wolverine shoes for your needs.

Hydrapak Morro: Not Just for the Hardcore Outdoor Adventurer

If you are a serious hiker or mountain biker you've probably heard of the Hydropak, but you don't have to be a hardcore outdoor enthusiast to love the Hydrapak Morro. This time of year, at least for us Northern folks a light jacket is a must, but when you are storming through the mall things get a bit heated - the Hydrapak Morro has plenty of room to stash your jacket. Ultralight Joe’s Moose Goo: Recipes and Variations

I just stepped into a big pile of moose goo this morning, well Ultralight Joe's Moose Goo to be precise, and it wasn't as bad as it sounds.

What is Ultralight Joe's Moose Goo?

Let me backtrack a bit. We just got back from a family camping trip to Gooseberry Falls State Park north of Duluth MN and had some great weather for camping and hiking. And we have another short trip planned for some local camping coming up in a few days. So that leads me to my dilemma and if you've done much camping or hiking I'm sure you can relate… what do you bring for food!

Enter my search for camping food ideas, and lo and behold I ended up getting sidetracked by a pile of moose goo right in the middle of my search, but don't fret it was actually pretty tasty and no it isn't what you may have originally thought.

You see moose goo or Ultralight Joe's Moose Goo as the official creator was, you guessed it Ultralight Joe, is actually an easy to make trail food that is perfect for camping and hiking no matter your level of outdoor experience. Only three ingredients and a few quick turns of a spatula and you have your own moose goo.

The original Ultralight Joe's Moose Goo

Basic Recipe:
• 2 parts honey
• 2 parts corn flour (NOT corn meal!)
• 1 part peanut butter (preservative-laden)
• Mix thoroughly, will take some time.
• Pack into Coghlan's Squeeze Tube, or in cold weather wrap in wax paper.

Single Squeeze Tube Proportions (2-3 lunches w/ large tortillas):
• 8 tbsp honey
• 8 tbsp corn flour
• 4 tbsp peanut butter

My Take on Ultralight Joe's Moose Goo

I didn't have the essential corn flour so as any kitchen creative guru will do I improvised and started digging through the pantry to see what we had on hand for my moose goo. I discovered an organic buckwheat pancake mix that would do in a pinch and gave 'er a go.

drum roll please…. and the result of my moose goo experiment.. quite good! And filling, I only had a couple spoon fulls and I was good to go. Which is perfect for hiking when you don't want to pack a ton and you just want a quick meal or snack before hitting the trails. Moose goo would also make a fantastic snack for kids if you are in the middle of a hike and you get the "I'm hungries" with a mile left until you get back to camp.

I still plan on trying the original Ultralight Joe's Moose Goo with the corn flour when I get my hands on some, and of course I have a few ideas that I'll have to share after I try them. So look forward to more variations including one with a powerful secret ingredient that the ancient Aztecs and Native Americans used to use for long endurance runs that I think would be a perfect addition to moose goo - stay tuned!
